Welcome to the 12th issue of Nuanced Narratives!

It's been a year already, but I'm looking forward to many more of these issues.

Later this year I’ll be opening an annual membership for a small fee, which will include product features as well as community services for visual journalists and data storytellers. The features and services are:

You can join the waitlist to get a 50% discount, I’ll email you once the features are completed and the membership opens.

The next member event will be in August with Zhutian Chen, to discuss GPT's Code Interpreter and its potential impact on our industry, as well as the impact of AI on data analysis and visualization in general.

Inspiration

The Inspiration of the Month goes to the Straits Times’ stunning research on temperature increases in Singapore.

With a special mention for Adolfo Arranz’ incredible illustrations in this piece on the power of sleep, as well the storybook approach in this article on Ukrainian deportations.

Insights

This month was rife with captivating interviews, here are a couple important takeaways from the conversations:

From my discussion with Nic Newman, about current trends in journalism and the role of visuals in an age of content abundance (watch full interview here):

As audiences fragment across platforms and preferences, visual content provides a universal language that bridges these gaps, fostering unified understanding.

Visual journalism offers an immersive experience that enhances user engagement, encouraging subscriptions with a preferred publisher. It is a USP to separate from the competition and to offer from something more visual than AI-generated content.

AI is set to turn journalists into multi-format storytellers. Text, voice, or visuals - we can automate content adaptation across different formats, AI frees journalists to focus on delivering quality stories.

From my talk with Adolfo on the use of illustration in journalism (read the interview here):

Understanding the subject you're visualizing is critical. Strive to tell a clear and compelling story, which will help you identify the most important moments to illustrate.

Remember to use clear illustration to communicate story. Focus on having a good story, quality visuals, a well-balanced composition, and a restrained color palette.

Obsessions

As per usual some AI updates, filtered to a few specific updates which will affect data storytelling.

Exciting times to say the least, we're being given more superpowers by the day.
